Our state (or maby the county) its illegal to sell turtles. you gotta catch em when there babies.

i used to have a 10 year old turtle (forget the species) but in my state (north carolina) its illegal now. Find slugs outside and put them into the tank (they LOVE them) other than that shrimp tails they adore as well!. (this is all an amphibious turtle ofc) box turtle or tortoise i have no experience with

Never feed your pets outside animals or mollusks of any kind they can carry so many harmful pathogens to turtles and humans.

I suggest box turtles or any tortoises, I don't like turtles cause they can contract nasty pathogens which can make you sick if mishandled.
I can't stress this enough though... "Always" research your pets some species can get very large very fast and theres very few places that will take them.
People like to assume any zoo in the area will take them and its not true, also most reptilian rescue places are not equipped to care for them properly either.
I've seen far to many animals get miss treated over the years.

When you decide on a few species though that you like let me know and I will give you true facts about there natural habitats and help you with there
diet/housing to cut on costs. The Internet is full of false information on many species.

I was at petsmart and was thinking of getting a new turtle

but the ones they have are pretty big and the whole setup costs a lot
the tank and everything for the size of the turtle

Did you have it for 10 years, or did you adopt it when it was 10 years?

no i got it when it was the size of a sand dollar, grew for 15 years. then got another the same size 4 years after my first. both were about the size of a CD case (shell only) before they ran away or gotten eaten by a raccoon. we moved them outside a couple years before the end.
