How I trained both of My dogs to go outside :
1. Buy it a cage, surprisingly, dogs don't like spreading poop on themselves, therefor the dog will learn holding it and waiting.
2. Show it where it should be doing the "job", after you bring it out of the cage (when you come back home or in the morning when you wake up), bring it outside and encourage it to pee/poop where you want to. (Consider giving a reward if it does it where you want, positive feedback is the key)
3. Test and start letting it out of the cage and see if it understood (maybe leave it in a room alone or something like that at first before giving access to the whole house).
4. ?????
5. Profit and tested working on my 2 adorable dogs which I leave wandering in my house now all day and never come back to any poop or pee.

If the dog is sick, simply clean up and wait for it to pass or seek advice from a vet.
One of my dog had to take a drug that made it incontinent, couldn't blame it for that.

Couldn't agree more. This is crate training. As well as getting the dog used to the crate, witch is not a bad thing, you reward them for pooping in the proper area. Eventually it will learn the proper area is where to go.

Positive reinforcement is always the best answer. Unfortunately my German Shepherd came from a really bad place. Got her at 3 months old. Pads tore up and bloody. Feces matted into her coat and literally had never had anyone talk to her. We thought she was deaf for the longest time because she didn't look when you said something. Nothing got through to her. Kennel training. Taking her outside every hour with treats when she went to the bathroom. Nothing. She went in the house and outside for practically 3 months. Took a lot of cleaning and upkeep on the carpets. Finally she got used to us and I was able to get her to start going outside by taking her to the door for a minute, then telling her potty. Going outside until she went and treating her with affection and snacks. Now she walks to the door scratches it and goes outside to potty immediately.
