To be sure, brumation sometimes makes people believe a beardie is dead; however if you are 100% sure then the only way to get the cause would be autopsy. I would guess that stress or poisoning would be the reason. Usually an older beardie can take a week of not eating (if really needed) or lower than usual temperatures, but stress can be a killer. Bearded dragons are very senstive to stress--possibly more so than most other lizards. They have a bit more personality than the average lizard.
Either way, sorry to hear about this. Best to just be honest with your teacher.
e: oh, on sand ... well if it was not a full adult sand can be an issue when it comes to digestion. However it sounds like he was not eating much. Usually they like to chow down.
