one rule of thumb is that smaller dogs live longer than larger ones
you will rarely see a german shepherd making it past 14
but there are plenty fox terriers getting to 20 and beyond

edit: my grandmother had a cocker spaniel bitch who lived to be 23 years old

dogs are flock animals, they try to leave the flock when they're ready to die. if you dogs starts to isolate it self, then you should worry
