Sibes are very strong willed dogs. So, if you don't have a lot of time ( and I stress A LOT OF TIME) they probably are not the right dog for you. A dogs temperament is generally what YOU make it. With lots of exercise they will be calm even as pups. However, like I said they are strong willed and WILL (not might) try to run the show, you have to show them who's boss. They are very territorial dogs as well so they make good guard dogs. If other people invade there space they may be bitten. Which is what most likely happened to stupidkid.
As far as your boy girl question. It really wont matter if they are spayed or neutered (which a lot of the time is a purchase requirement with breeders). If not though 2 girls, or a boy and a girl, and even then you have to watch them while they are in heat because they will procreate even if they are brother and sister.
Also, they require daily grooming and have a lot of hair. These dogs will get very hot very fast in a warm climate. However, it is acceptable to have them short cut as it's called (but that may take away the look of the dog you wanted). But, you live on the Carolina coast so there's always the beach

not to mention you guys have a semi winter there so they shouldn't be that uncomfortable with a short cut.
Hope that helps somewhat.
Scripture
all accurate, except for the cutting the hair short part. Unless the groomer is very experienced with the breed and knows what they're doing, cutting it short can actually cause pattern baldness.
though I wouldn't suggest getting one in your local, unless you feel like building a doghouse with an air conditioner.
their thick double pelt means they are
horrid at dealing with any sort of heat (but put them in 2 feet of snow and they're in heaven)
on the lab note: they're great 1'st time dogs. easily trained, very smart, eager to please, very tolerant of children.
personally I

pit bulls, they do great from hot to fairly cold weather. However I would
NOT recommend them to anyone without extensive training experience and a calm but dominant demeanor.
