Tarantulas primary defense mechanism is scraping it's hair off and irritating your eyes, they will rarely bite and even then it's not very bad. It's similar to a Hornet or Wasp sting. You are more of a danger to the tarantula than it is to you. If you drop them from even a foot or two it can die.
