cats easily live longer than 20 years
and smaller dog breeds like 'fox terrier' quite often make it to 20 as well
medium and large parrots have live spans well in excess of 20 years
(even the small ones like 'budgies' live 15-20 years)
from the common pets (not counting fishes) it's mainly the larger dog breeds which don't live that long
Its all on how well the owner takes care of it and how lucky the dog is to not have encountered accidents or genetic diseases. My grandfather has a golden lab who got hit by a gravel truck and lived, later in its life it got cancer and the vet said it only had like 6 months to live, well its been 4 years since then so. The dogs like 15 now, but its been on its last leg for like 4 years so who knows.
I had a border collie but he ended up having canine epilepsy and the worst kind of it too so we had to put him down when it got too bad.
