So... I haven't posted on this site in forever, but after an incident that happened yesterday, I'm not sure where else to consult. Basically, I want help in selecting a good guard dog. Here's the tricky part of it, because I know of some breeds that are excellent, but I live in a town home so I have a weight restriction. I have not been able to get a hold of anyone to find out the exact weight, but I am assuming under 50 pounds. Here are some general guidelines in a dog I would like:

1. EXCELLENT Guard Dog.
2. Low-maintenance in exercise.
3. Loves owners, but not strangers.
4. Purebred only, please. I want to know what I am getting.
5. Zero prey drive (I have a cat and rabbit).

Basically, I want a dog that LOVES its family and HATES everything else, lol. We don't have many guests over, and we can figure that out when the time comes.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

what do you expect a guard dog to do? if they just need to bark, then get a chihuahua. they bark at everyone, granted it's a yip that won't scare anyone but it'll alert you if someone's breaking in.

if you want a big dog that looks fierce-some then try a doberman. they might be slightly over 50 lbs though. german shepherds are another good choice but again i think they're around 60 lbs.

- The term guard dog implies that your dog will need to be fit. That said the low maintenance exercise portion of your criteria is directly contradictory.

- Having a dog jumping up on strangers and licking their face is one thing, but having a dog that "Hates" everything else is a terrible idea. Having a dog be wary of strangers is a good quality in a guard dog, but you do not want something that will bite a person/child that happens to walk up to it while you're on a walk. That leaves you open to an enormous pain and suffering lawsuit, and almost ensures that the dog will be euthanized.

- Zero prey drive... Impossible. Dogs have been domesticated by humans, but they are still dogs. Every dog on earth has a prey drive. Personally I have 2 dogs and 2 cats....my dogs occasionally capture and kill squirrels, gophers, a possum one time etc... The trick is to teach them what they can't hurt. (Cats typically do this by themselves...)

- The fascination with purebred dogs is always astounding to me. Natural selection will automatically select traits for improved health...but to each their own.

my akc Doberman is 100lbs, also no apartments/ town homes will allow me to bring my Doberman.

I have also never seen a Doberman that weighs 50lbs

another thing to look at, is if your town home will allow breeds that are known as " aggressive". some places wont allow dogs labeled as aggressive regardless of their size.

your an idiot.....

2. Low-maintenance in exercise.
5. Zero prey drive (I have a cat and rabbit).

I have a Mali, and your cat and rabbit would be dead within minutes. 1 day of not exercising these dogs and you'll be looking to get rid of it the next day.

If you do not want to exercise your dogs, do not get a dog. Simple as that.

If you adamant about getting one, then ADOPT a senior German Shepherd.
