hey guys, my sister got a springer spaniel last Christmas. Her name is Chevy. This is without a doubt the most hyperactive dog I have ever met. It makes me sad, cause though my sister loves Chevy, my sister just can't match the energy level and is getting kind of tired of her.

I understand that springer spaniels are very energetic dogs. I'm just curious if anyone has any advice on how to approach the situation or training techniques. Just general advice on how to approach insanely energetic dogs.

She's going to be raised as a bird hunting dog, if that makes a difference.

thanks in advance!

is a playmate an option? letting them both roam around the backyard might be good for it

I suppose that would be a good idea. I doubt she'll be thrilled about twice the responsibility and twice the dog food though. :P

careful with these kind of dogs, an accident happen fast, lost my dog today, stroke by a car, a stupid 20 years old woman driving at 90 mph instead of 30. These dogs need a lot of exercise, and they may do everything to get the exercise.

What's the breed of your dog?

I'm sorry for your loss. :(

it's a springer spaniel. My sister isn't one for getting any exercise unfortunately.

oh springer spaniel, mine was en english setter, spring spaniel and english setter are kinda similar in the way they both love to run, I used to walk my dog 1 hour 30 every morning & every evening, and sometimes I would make 7 hours long circuit and my dog would still ask for more.

sounds like a case of somebody getting/buying a dog and didn't know anything about the breed they were getting. it is indeed sad that people get pets that they do not want. whoever gave her the dog as a gift needs to get their head screwed on straight. my advice? tell your sister to stop being lazy and take care of the dog SHE WANTED.

In her defense, she goes to school full time and works almost full time. She just doesn't have the time or energy to play with the dog all day.

She also did not plan for it. A relative of mine who apparently "needs to get her head screwed on straight" happened to breed a litter of springers a couple of weeks before Christmas, and decided to give one of the pups to my sister as a gift. Since my sister technically did need a hunting dog at the time.

so though there is some validity to your "advice," your hostile ignorance isn't very helpful. The dog could have gone to a better owner with more time to give, that is true.

Buy a bike, take it for a ride with a ''Springer'' which you attach to your bike which absorbs 90% of the tugs.

Or pay some of your neighbours kids/teenagers to take it for a walk, the ones you trust ofcourse.

Theres a lot of ways you can train it, you just need to find the will to do it.

If she does not have ANY time for the dog, she should consider give it to someone who can take care of her.

For the training part, you can use a vest so the dog would use more energy while taking a walk. You can put on rollerblades and let the dog pull you. You can take it swimming.
