I should be able to buy my new fish as long as the water tests well on Sunday.

I was wanting some suggestions for good fish combos to go in a 10 gallon tank.
I would prefer to have a variety of fish opposed to 2 schooling breeds.

All kinds of colorful, but just about everywhere i look they tell me i can go with 1-2 schooling species and that is it.

I go with about 1 inch per gallon, so with a 10 gallon tank you can have 10, 1 inch fish.

id reccomend a pleco, they are a little longer than 1 inch, so that counts as 2.

so then you have 8 fish left.

id go with a mix of tetras: neon, glowlight, xray, or what ever else the store carries.

The problem is that most information shows that plecos are schooling fish and should be bought as a minimum of 6

dont even get a pleco, they get huge, get a Siamese algae eater, they are small, and look liek sharks ^^
as for fish, get a centerpiece, like a shark or something cool, and then have your background fish, generally schooling species, like tetra or barbs (avoid tiger barbs like the plague)

plecos are ugly! dont get one!

also heres a list of fish i own, in case you wanna google them

clown loach
Siamese algae eater
bala shark
rose line shark (barb)
odessa barb
black phantom tetra
colombian tetra
german blue ram

(now pet store will tell you half these fish shouldnt be kept together, thats a load of crap, you really have to try everything out, each individual fish has a different temperment)

ive never read anything like this any where, do you have a link to this? your talking about plecostomus right?

scratch that, did some more research and while the fancy plecos like gold nugget ones are solitary, the common pleco actually is a schooling fish. thanks for sharing.

alot of it depends on the order you put the fish in, and if they have terratories setup. like you could have a school of 20 tetras in a tank for a month and then put in 5 black convicts and as long as you fed them regularly, and they didnt encroach on the convits spawning area, youd have 20 tetras and 5 black convicts in the same tank.

on the other hand if you have the 5 convicts in the tank for a month and add the 20 tetras, they will likely be gone by the next day.

you probly have to clean it atleast once a month if not twice a month.

Your 30 gallon tank will not be sufficient for the bala shark. Everywhere i read suggest a minimum of 50 gallons for this fish.

I plan on doing something like this:
4-6 dwarf cory/panda cory/otocinclus depending on what my lfs has in stock
4-6 gold/white cloud mountain minnows or honey gourami or dalmatian molly
4-6 celestial pearl danios

and later on I may add some snails or shrimp.

with this setup i am advised to perform 25-30% water changes weekly.
