I know next to nothing about car audio.

Hanging out with a buddy, and his box he purchased was too big for his trunk so we decided to try and build a custom one, something neither of us have ever done before.

Box dimensions (WHD): 36" x 16.5" x 19"
Subwoofer: Kicker S15L7
1000 RMS
Tuning Frequency: 32hz




So I did some research, created this mockup in "SketchUp". We went to lowes and picked up some MDF. We're predrilling the holes, gluing the boards, then screwing everything together.

This is where we're at thus far:



I'm really unsure if I've got the port length right and wanted to confirm before we finished this badboy up this weekend.

Any tips/advice?

my math shows the port to be 35hz tuning and why bother with this sub if you are only going to do bare minimum air space?

are you sure the sub can even mount with only a 15.75 front face? and by mount i don't mean screwing it right on the very edge of the mdf because that simply isn't an option because the mdf will be destroyed when you try screwing it in and it won't hold together worth a damn.

It's all the trunkspace we have.

The speaker cutout is 13.75 so plenty of room there. 35hz is too high though for the tuning.

We have this box right now but the depth doesn't allow it to fit in the trunk space:

13.75 is the cutout but the screw holes are further out than that. cutout is just what you need to make the backside go into the box. so you'll be putting screws less than an inch away from the edge and the edge will probably come all apart from it.

if it was hardwood this would be less of an issue but mdf likes to break all apart so any screws near the edge usually means you just ruint that piece of mdf.

dropping port width to 4 or 4.3 inches would do the trick. 4 drops it down to 30.5hz and 4.3 about 32hz.

this also gives you more air for the sub chamber which will help it perform better.

yeah the trunk space issue is something that would of been good to consider beforehand. these smaller boxes waste the full potential of that sub but it should still be fine.
