I've got roughly 180 gigs of music, all of which I'd like to bring with me in my car. Ipods cannot store the amount I need, I was going to get a power inverter and use my laptop but this seems silly. So what are my options here? Carputer? Tablet + external hdd? Laptop?

180 gigs you want to listen to in your car? or 180 gigs you just want stored and transportable?

I know its not 180 but you can get a 128 gig usb drive they are usually under $100. Thats what i use and i plugs straight into my USB headunit and i can browse through it there and play music directly.

I currently use a 32 gig flash drive and it's just like a Cd, can't really navigate it the way I want to. Just an endless list of songs in alphabetical order.
I just want to have my whole collection portable and easy to navigate.

grab 1 or 2 used ipods for cheap. for storage and ease of navigation thats about the only choice you have.

Genre --> Artist --> Album --> Song

Note I use a 16gb flash drive and I think I'm going to get a bigger one soon.

I've got a Pioneer DEH-P6200BT, which offers everything I need, except a nice visual interface to browse my songs.
It will show them in folder view, but that's far too difficult to navigate while on the road.
I think I'm going to go the netbook route as soon as I find a fair priced one.
Has anyone had any experience using the power inverters to power a computer in their vehicle?
I feel like if I go this route, I'd want a netbook because I feel it would be less power consumption, and a better standing battery life without having to keep it plugged in all the time. Bring it in the house, charge it, and let it run on battery until it NEEDS plugged in, but if it'll last at least 2 hours straight without needing a charge, I'll be fine, as I never travel for more than 2 hours or so.
Plus I could tether wifi from my phone if I'm just sitting in the parking lot at work or whatever.

But then again, I have two full sized laptops that I could just upgrade the hard drive on the one, which I already have a larger hdd that I could use, so I don't know. My only problem is that I'd need to buy a new battery for it since the current one is 100% dead. And it would take up much more space, when a netbook could easily be tucked under my dash, or in my center console for safe keeping.

I really don't want an ipod, but if that's my best option I guess I'll have to cave in and just accept it.

ya netbook isnt a bad option.

you may consider looking into a car gun safe around the same size as the netbook if you want some added security.
