I currently have 2 brand new 6x9 Pioneers for the back window (Size that originally comes with the car)
Would like a 6 1/2 for the front (2) and a sub and headunit. think that means i need two amps. one 4 chan and one mono block?

whats your alternator amperage output?

i would also need to know the exact model of those 6x9s.

The amp output is ~65A, keep in mind I have no a/c so shouldnt need to upgrade. If I do i can get a 100-150+ Amp one as well let me know.

Model is :TS-975M

with the current one you can get around 500rms watts at most.

with that in mind you will only have 1 amp for the sub and run the speakers off the head unit. you may also want to consider installing sound deadening material since i can only assume you get a lot of road and engine noise in that old mustang.

with a new head unit you will have to do some work on the dash or build a new place to mount it in the glove box or something.

if i were you i would just put those 6x9s on craigslist and buy 4 matching 6.5s. oval speakers in general sound worse and it's also better to get matching sets so they all sound the same.

also get some of the TCA series 10 or 12 gauge speaker wire if your car still has the old factory wiring it's a good time to replace it.

actually just decided to look it up and double check speaker sizes.

Yeah I do get a decent amount of cab noise, I have also already made a standard size box for the head unit in the glove box.

Ill get the sound deadening material as well for around the speakers and cover the normal surfaces in it (don't add to budget)

Also, Ill spend an extra 100 and get a new alternator rated for 100amps this way I have more just in case I do want the power eventually. (thinking for the future)

One issue I have is that in the 66 mustang the back window has a package tray that is meant for 6x9 and i have seen a few 6 1/2 for this and it looks funky to me.(personal opinion).
Also the holes prefabbed into the package tray are meant to fit 6x9s. How bad of a distortion will this cause to keep this and just add front speakers at 6 1/2?

Lastly, sorry to change things up a bit since i decided to purchase the alternator as well. Would I now need to get a 4chan amp for the other speakers?
If the budget is too low I can swing another 100-200 as well!

I can do any mods I need to, was planning on getting new kick panels to add the 6 1/2 in the front and the sub was going to get mounted in the trunk or w/e best fit. I can do pretty much whatever you recommend to be honest. Don't know a whole lot about speakers and just want some quality for cruising finally.

you won't need to get a 4 channel but you can if you want. it should be pretty well rounded as it is but if you want to go ahead and amp them.

if you are going to amp them it really would be better if you matched them. once you amp them their different sound properties more obvious. tweeter style, cone materials, surround materials, overall designs are pretty much completely different company to company. not saying you can't mix them but you have the budget to avoid the problem altogether so it would be better if you just got those polks for all the slots.

i can't edit my post with links or they break so i'll reply to the edit in this one.

if you are going to do some interior mods you may want to abandon the rear deck speakers altogether. direct sunlight, close to subwoofer, further from you.

a higher power set of component speakers(separated midwoofer and tweeter with crossovers) and a 2 channel amp would be nice.

and youd suggest these to go in the kick panels then? so it'd be a three speaker system with two (4 with tweeter) and sub?

That takes away a lot of the modifications so I'm not totally opposed to that still get around the same quality as the other set up?
