There's some nice sound bars out there, but I haven't seen one that suits me for under $500.

If you want something worth buying get a full receiver and speaker setup, I have had the same 5.1 reciever for years and couldnt be happier with it.

This.

You'd even be better off with a proper pair of bookshelfs or towers and a good receiver. Then slowly expand your system to 2.1, 5.1 or 7.1 when you get the cash.

Never been a fan of soundbars or small satellite speakers...you have to realize that sound reproduction is regulated heavily by the laws of physics and you need proper speakers to reproduce music and movies in the best way.
