I was thinking more along the lines of wiring it to 2 Ohm for 750 RMS, which ATR's take beautifully.

thats not a bad deal at all.

if its in your price range then grab it. those subs are very popular for entry level people and from my experience last a long time if you treat them right.

But ive heard Kicker isnt that great from others, are they wrong?

kicker makes entry level stuff mostly. you can't spend $420 and expect to get high end stuff. as far as cheap stuff goes however kicker does alright.

there are lots and lots of companies out there that will charge well over your entire budget for a single subwoofer and kicker is bad compared to them. but compared to other things in the price range they are fine.

Well within my 500-$600 budget, is it better to get 1 higher quality sub or 2x lower quality ones?

in your budget you could get a single high quality sub and nothing else. grab that kicker package because for the price its probably the best you are going to get.

this leaves you money for a line out converter and interior speakers.

In a trunk a single 12" like the SA-12" will get A LOT louder than two ATR-12's and sound better doing it... I've heard 2 Type R's and I've heard 1 SA-12 on the same power and the SA-12 crushed the ATR's. and definatly go with the MBQuart lately Hifonics has gone down hill, last years brutus's are when they stopped being worth the price. Hell price/performance I'd almost prefer Audiopipe.

But once again this is my opinion and you guys can do what you wish ;D I always say go with the higher end subwoofer that meets your application needs. You're probably not going to fit an adequate sized box in your trunk for 2 ATR's that will take 1kw and be loud at the same time with the box that you'll fit and if you do you're not going to have much airspace unless you aim the subwoofer forward. With 1 SA-12" you can build a box slightly bigger than recommendations and gain a bit of air space to get louder off less power and off 1kw a SA-12 is going to a move a whole lot more than 2 ATR's. Personally I NEVER recommend Alpine, Kicker, Rockford etc or any of those unless it's Door Speakers or Headunits and even then I rarely recommend them.

But yes the ATR's are a viable option just don't get the HFi they are junk. Also note that that CVR box is SEALED and is NOT going to get loud in a trunk not to mention it's a prefab. The package seems solid but the box is a waste. If anything buy the package and sell the box and build a ported enclosure tuned properly.
