It is the same thing as hooking it up to a car battery because the amp is still drawing the same amount of current.
Most people wire their amps with 4g wire. Some use 8g with one amp, others use 1g or bigger if multiple amps.
You can't go from using 4g wire to '14-18' g wire...this is simple physics. Even 14g wire has too much resistance for the amount of power your amp will be drawing...continuing to use too small gauge wire will lead to equipment failure or a fire (yes, your wires will melt and burn your house down).
The people who have done this sort of thing before probably know what Ohm's law is and have even just a basic knowledge of how electronics work.
My advice is to sell your amp/sub and buy a proper home theater sub. This is not only sound much better, but it will prevent your house from burning down.
