Better to overpower? That doesn't make any sense, I want my ATR's to last. I didn't know Kenwood made crappy amps, weird.

It is better contrary to popular belief. Distortion its caused by the amp clipping because it cant keep up with the power demand. And distortion its the main cause of speaker failure.
Also Kenwood has always made shitty overrated amps :/
E:To answer the original question.

1)Turn the volume up on your radio without the amp turned on, and set the equalizer to the desired settings.
2)Set the radio to max volume, or at least the max volume you normally listen music at.
3)Adjust eq as necessary to avoid distortion
4)Turn on the amp and listen for distortion, if there is turn the gain knob down until you cant hear any distortion.
5)The eq settings and any other settings on the amp will vary depending on the box you have. So you will have to set them up by ear.

Doing the above steps will probably not make it sound any better but it will guarantee the longest life expectancy for your equipment.

So if it's not causing distortion I can turn the gain all the way up?
Also, there are three hertz settings, 0/25/125(?). What should I do with this?

Yeah pretty much, remember that distortion isnt very distinguishable when ur playing low frequencies so u have to listen closely.
Its an infrasonic filter most likely, id set it at 25 assuming u have a conventional box.

That would probably be your low pass/ high pass/ no filter switch.

Wait, is it a knob or a switch?

There is a switch that has three positions, LP HP and FULL (is what it should be)
Then there is likely to be a Low Pass knob and a High Pass knob (assuming it's a class AB amp)

That 0-25-125 swtich is your infrasonic filter.
When it's at 25 it will cut out ALL notes below 25 hertz (most of those notes are inaudible anyway)

lol so what do you suppose a "low pass/ high pass" is?

Awesome, very helpful. I looked again and it's actually 0-15-25. So if I don't want it filtering anything I set it to off (0)?
What should I start with as a base for LP/HP knobs, 0?

Went out and looked while the car is actually here before I forget. (It seems every time I'm posting my fiance has the Malibu)
The settings I need to tweak are ISF (0-15-25), I think I'm set on 15. Bass Boost, after everything else is tweaked right I'll turn this up as high as my subs allow.
LPF, I have set around 150 right now. And lastly input sensitivity, 0.2 min-5 max. Any suggestions on where I should start, and around what settings I may end
up with for two 12" ATR's?
