I would just grab a spool of 16 and cut all new pieces to length, don't try to length old pieces.

how much power does the subwoofer put out? rms watts not peak watts on this.

Subwoofers don't put out power amplifiers do so the better question would be "how much power are you giving the subwoofer?"
I'd say 12-14ga should be more than adequate for the subwoofer and 14-16ga for the speakers.

and don't mind Cadillac he's a complete noob/tool.

amplifers put power to the subwoofer which the subwoofer turns into a different form of energy. this is the chain of events that happens with speakers. we measure this ability in wattage terms because its electrical based.

chances are it all runs off one big amplifier so knowing the amplifiers specs without knowing the subwoofer specs doesn't help with choosing wire just for the subwoofer now does it?

my parents have a home system, and you have to plug the subwoofer into the wall... so i think it runs off its own power.

Not all home theaters come with a powered sub, some run off just the amp. The higher end ones come with a powered sub tho.
