You could have as many batteries as you like with absolutely no harm to the electrical, just make sure your not combining dead and new batteries because the new battery will take on the same charge as the dead bat and will die too. As far as alternator runs theres a couple ways of doing it you just have to choose if you want to separate your car audio from your other cars processes (AC, Heat, lights) or run them together. You could have one alternator run to the front bat, and then parallel battery to battery, pos to pos neg to neg to the rear bat. Or dont parallel your front and rear but have a seperate alternator run charging your rear bats. ( i would only do this if i had a decent bank of bats in the back). The only harm i see if your retarded and wire them in series to 24v and blow up your batteries and fry your entire electrical.

diode failure is what happens when your alternator can't keep the batteries at the proper voltage. the diodes heat up and fail if its constantly having to deal with charging low voltage batteries.

Multiple batteries will stabilize your voltage so it doesn't dip to give you a cushion. Adding batteries would be better for an alternator and your amplifier(s). Chances are on a stock alt your drawing full ampres out of it regardless of with 1 or 50 batteries so it will be working just as hard with the single as it would with 50, but with the 50 batteries your voltage is stable.

the problem is when your are using more than the alternator can put out. if the voltage dips because it can't keep up with power use your alternator diodes will start heating up and eventually fail.

balance is key when it comes to your electrical system.

The only time i could see what your saying if your full tilt for a long period of time and all of your batteries are drained but you keep playing eventually straining your voltage to the point where your alternator cant keep up with the demand of power.

It may not harm your electrical system, but every additional battery places an additional load on the alternator. Furthermore, the power used to charge the batteries while the car is running (eg. the alternator is in use) could be used to power the amps. So, by adding numerous, unnecessary batteries, it only subtracts power from the system that could go towards powering the amps.

The only real reason you should be adding additional batteries is if you like playing music in your car with the engine off for extended periods of time. Otherwise, it is far more effective to upgrade your alternator.

very wrong, there is no additional load on the alternator from adding batteries. So you have a 150 amp alternator and you add 2 batteries now its still only putting out <150 amps. The only thing thats changing is the duration of the charge, that's why you let your batteries charge in between songs. Subtracting power that could go towards the amps? Your amps draw from your batteries which are still getting the SAME 150 amp charge rate, you gain higher overall voltage meaning more power out of your amps.

well 1000rms system will need a 120 amp alternator in order to keep up with the power draw. if your alternator is in the right power range than you can do whatever with batteries but batteries don't do much if you have an undersized alternator.

I don't think you know what you're talking about at all...so lets go over some charging system basics:

It has to generate more voltage than the battery's rated voltage to overcome the internal resistance of the battery. This may seem strange, but the current needed to recharge the battery would not flow at all if the charging system's output voltage was the same as the battery voltage. A greater difference of potential (voltage) between the battery's voltage and the alternator's output voltage will provide a faster charging rate.

    As long as the engine is running, all of the power for the accessories is delivered by the alternator. The battery is actually a load on the charging system. The only time that the battery would supply power with the engine running is when the current capacity of the alternator is exceeded or when engine is at a very low idle.

How an alternator works:

Lets look at an example...120 alternator with a 20 amp load (with stereo off)...add another battery that adds an additional 5 amp load (pick a number). Add 10 batteries, that's an additional 50 amp load, etc. Lets say your stereo system draws 100 amps...before with 1 battery you were fine. You add another battery to help with voltage drops, but you also put too great a load on your system and now that additional 5, 50, etc amps going towards charging a battery means you cannot power your amp as much as you could previously.

Also, using additional batteries to compensate for voltage drops means that the alternator has to spend more time charging those batteries.

Furthermore, alternators regulate the voltage in a system (described above)...so a battery doesn't add more power to your amps (this is a ridiculous assertion)...it provides short term voltage drop compensation in a system with an underpowered alternator, but it does not "give amps more power"...as it does not provide more amperage. Will an additional battery help regulate short term voltage drops? Yes. Does it provide an amp with "more power"? No.
