oh yeah that would be incredibly stupid if i didn't get a head unit with aux when i want it for this purpose lol

but do i need rear aux to do this? i see a bunch of decks have 6 rca connectors and i'm wondering if i can use those

and i'll probably be doing this myself unless there's some huge danger about it

Nope, the RCA's are for amplifiers. AUX = 3.5mm = headphone jack.

so are Y-cables that are rca to aux only for units that specify rear aux?
