im trying to understand this but maybe i am too tired...

do ohms divide the wattage? :huh:
is it the speaker load + ohms that change the wattage?


say i got a two sub 8 ohm setup and a 2kw amp @ 800W each.

what exactly do you mean by 2 sub 8 ohm?

as in two 8 ohm single voice coil or two 4 ohm single voice coil or two 2 ohm dual voice coil?

ohms is basically electrical resistance. the higher the ohm load the more resistant it is.

Ohmsare the measurement of resistancein an electrical circuit.
Less resistance = more power! (power is measured in watts)
Wiring different sub woofers differently allows you to drop the resistance in the circuit. Fewer ohms = more wattage from the amp.
Too little resistance and there will be too much power going through your amplifier, that's when you start seeing smoke haha!

Sure. Parallel divides the resistance, series multiplies the resistance.

For example, three speakers that are each 4 ohm in parallel (red to red, black to black) is 4 ohm / 3 speakers = 1.3 ohm load.

Two speakers that are each 4 ohm in series (red to black to red to black) is 4 ohm x 2 speakers = 8 ohm load.

ok but what does that do to the numbers on the amp? and the speakers?? :huh:

this stuff isnt my fortay... but im kinda interested in getting a new hobby...

1.3 ohm load and 8 ohm load would be the load on the amp. Like I said, less resistance = more power.
If you amp can't handle a low load (such as 1 or 1.3 ohms) and you put it on there anyway, you fry the amp.

so 2x 800W speakers @ 4ohmes each connected in a series making it 8 ohms would still put 800 to each if connected to a properly configured 2000W amp?
the ohms dont affect the power going thru the speaker?

Inherently, more resistance = less power.
If you have two speakers that are single voice coil 4 ohm speakers just hook them up pos to pos to pos and neg to neg to neg.
If it's a 2-channel amp then one channel for each speaker.
if it's a mono block (1 channel amp) then the pos from both speakers goes to pos on the amp and the neg from both speakers goes to neg on the amp.
