I know nothing about car audio, or audio in general, but I want something "decent" sounding in my vehicle.
I've got a 96 S-10 Blazer, and the current system is awful. The least I can say is it does not have the stock headunit, either way it's terrible.
Basically I'm fishing for information, give me guides, tips, whatever you want to help me on my quest. I won't be purchasing anything until I'm familiar with a lot of the stuff.
If you were me, and you had say.. a $800 budget, what would you get? And why? I need facts and information on these things. I don't simply want it thrown at me and being told "BUY THIS, IT'S BEST!". I want to know why it's the best.

I'll be needing everything, which as far as I know includes:
Headunit
Speakers (Front + Rear)
Sub(s)
Amp
What more is there? What am I missing?

I mainly listen to metal, some rock, little bit of techno/dubstep (would enjoy good sounding bass over thumping annoying bass for these situations), some rap (same thing as the dubstep/techno), I mainly want sound quality, while still being able to achieve a powerful kick.

Depending on how much you're pumping through your amp, you might want to get a capacitor. It'll take a lot off stress of your battery / alternator. B)

I'm not an expert, but am becoming fairly fluent in these matters.

As far as what you're missing, you'll need to spend a fair amount on wiring/installation. Also, you will need to mitigate any power issues you're going to run
into. This can be done in a few different ways, all of which cost money. Most say the first thing to upgrade is the battery and big three, but I went with a
capacitor and that fixed all of my power issues. If upgrading your battery and big three isn't enough, you'll need to upgrade your alternator.

I went in not knowing what I'm doing and wired everything myself. While I'm relatively glad I know my system very well now, it's quite the headache for an inexperienced person.

With an ~$800 budget I personally would check out the 12" Type R's, as in this price range they're the biggest bang for your buck. Great SPL with decent SQ.
When shopping for an amp to power these, keep in mind that they can handle 500 RMS and work best when overpowered. Ignore the max wattage rating, always
look at RMS at 2 Ohms as Type R's handle 2 Ohms well.

This is where the experts step in and tear my suggestions apart, as I'm still relatively new to this.

i wouldnt buy type r's... overpriced

you can just as good of sound with an entry level woofer

type rs are not overpriced :/

$140ish for a sub with good spl and fair sq thats built well...its one of the more budget friendly good subs out there.

my buddy got a 45 pound type R 15 for 150, thats not bad at all

even his pyle 2220 watt does her justice
