Actually, the most effective route is this.
You get squirtle to like level 10 or 12 or you can get him to 13 to learn water gun but you don't need to.
You kill brock right away because you have 4x power against him because both geodude and onix are rock/ground and have 4x weakness to water.
Then you catch a nidoran (male) and level it up only. Once you turn it into a nidorino, once you get the moon stone in the cave towards cerulean, turn it into a nidoking. You now have a 495 base stat pokemon this early in the game. You get the nidoking to level 23 for Thrash. And even though you are weak to water because of nidoking's ground type, you still wipe the floor with missy because Thrash will eat right through her. Then you get Dig from the rocket guy behind the gym in the house that got robbed. You teach this to Nidoking. Go to the 3rd city badge, complete the S.S. Anne and then go rape Lt. Surge, Nidoking is immune to electric. You can roll through the 4th gym also as Ground is super effective against some of them because of their poison type and can just use Thrash and Dig. The only hard gym is Sabrina because they are fast psychic pokemon. Jasmine is a fucking joke, just dig all of her pokemon. Blaine is also a joke, Dig all of his pokemon to death. That last gym you can rape it with blastoise.
Nidoking OP.
In terms of dueling real people though, sand attack/recover/calm mind/bulk up/sleep status is basically the name of the game.
