i dont understand what all this EV and modest and shiny stuff is yet

but one thing i dont like is how when you kill a trainers pokemon and they send a new one out you dont get the dialogue to send out another pokemon

Depends on the Pokemon. Some require happiness to evolve. Like Eevee into Espeon or Umbreon, it needs to be happy.
