the shield is half his hp, yes
but only if you manage to take half your hp in damage fast enough, and he's a bruiser so it's not always the easiest thing to do to him
and it rapidly decays so you will almost never get the full benefit from it

Boy let me tell you of a champion who heals for 400 crits for 1400 spins through walls and goes invisible for 5 seconds

Lemme tell you about a champ who is Ranged-Melee-Tanky-DPS-Assassin-Mage-Tank-Support.

2 dashes, built in sustain,shield, execute, reliable point and click cc, manaless
