MTGA is ok, I've played off and on since beta. Probably spent around $100 in total and I have all the meta decks and plenty of wildcards to build whatever else. I usually do a sealed draft when a new set is released, and this last time I ended up +200 more gems than I started with and 9 packs. I personally spend the gold I accumulate on boosters to collect wildcards and VAULT Progress. Generally I buy packs from a set I have almost complete, So I either get a wildcard or gems for the rare/mythic rare spot. All the commons and uncommons go to VAULT PROGRESS, so it's like trading them for a mythic and couple of rares later on. Also getting prerelease codes for each set on jsp helps fill it out too.
There is a rotation coming up, so many of the older sets won't be standard playable, but you can still play them in historic. If I was just starting to build up my account, I would save all my wildcards until the meta becomes established after rotation and build one of the meta decks to use to grind out dailies with. mtgogoldfish website has a standard meta section with the most popular deck build for standard. But a lot of the cards in those decks right now won't be available to play in standard after rotation, which is why it might be better to just grind and save until you can build a top tier deck. But it's up to you how you go about it.
