Love to waste money so currently thinking about getting into MTG

Started playing arena on ipad to see if it is for me but assume I wanted to go forward with it and get in cards. Along which DIMENSIONS to decide which cards(boosters?) to buy first?

Eg I heard there is
-standard vs modern
-commander?/planeswalker?!
-…?

Which kind of these choices do I need to make to find out which cards to buy initially?
Tyvm!

Where I live EDH is the format to go. Buy a precon deck and then buy singles the ones you want. Boosters is a waste of money, but fun to open :D

Edh is commander, right?
Not sure I like the 1card each only in the beginning
Might rather go with a 60card modern? starter?! instead cuz looks easier-wdyt?

Currently looking into different tactics x colors to chose a first starter deck

Appreciate it

60 card format is where it's at imo.. but most people these days like to play Commander(formerly known as EDH).. personally I hate it.. but its what is most common atm.

Everyone will recommend buying Singles as needed rather than boosters.. Personally, it's all about what's available to you. Drafts/Sealed events are what I recommend the most. Open your own cards, and keep em while winning more.

My personal favorite colors are Green and White for starters.

Yeah I feel like going for a 60card (modern?!) starter set
Currently appears that I enjoy (non–creature but) spellbased aggro decks, so will be looking for red/black or red/green maybe

Any recommendatios/ hints how to find such a deck/set which is purchaseable?!

how much money are you looking to spend? I would recommend standard to start to see if you actually enjoy the game (and the community you'll be playing with in paper)

modern and most other formats are going to be really expensive to get into so unless you plan on traveling solo or have an active local game store near you maybe play older formats online and standard paper until you really get a feel for what you want to play. EDH can be fun but its a very social/casual format where who you play with can change what you're allowed to play. You could buy a $500-$1000 deck and no one will want to play with you because its an "unfun" or really strong commander.

I have not played the game in a couple years but here are my impressions of the formats:

Standard - Competitive to very competitive, meta cycles several times a year, card prices boom and bust.
Pauper - Usually pretty casual, cheap decks, stagnant meta, finding players can be hard.
Commander - Very popular, large deck diversity, varies between casual and competitive.
Modern - Very competitive, slowly evolving meta, can be very very expensive, often considered most "hardcore."
Draft - Low commitment way to play without heavy investment, but drafting is it's own skill entirely.

Ultimately you should decide how competitive you want to be, and then make friends with a similar mindset. Having a good group of friends to play with really makes the game more enjoyable. The best overall balance is probably commander and, as others have pointed out, there are lots of good premade commander decks to get you started.
