No, that's not the typical sign of a motherboard failure. A failing motherboard will randomly BSOD at load up and while running. It sounds more like either he has a bad sector on his hard drive, or somehow due to a virus, or accidentally deleting something, he screwed up his registry / start up files. Did you try running it on safe mode? If safe mode works, try using the windows recovery thing, and reverting back a week or so. See if that helps.
