casters got nerfed in solo because of the addition of magical defense to armors. not only did players get it but so did mobs. this effectively nerfed critical hits vs mobs where a charm could strike for up to twice the damage of its max value (as you would see with a melee weapon)
it was thought to balance out the caster to be more on par with a melee character (not true) and as a result to aid in that transition charms now cost less mana to cast. however it means more godly charms now are even more godly priced as are the subpar ones beneath them.
only benefit from the caster nerf is the lower mana value cost. this helped healers in cats
the most recent patch however allowed for a chance to hit multiple mobs when casting in catas. this coupled with the added effect of EE on top of charms allows for what people have dubbed megacrits. where if you critical vs 2 or more mobs in cata the dmg could be devastating if you have a high amount of EE and a high charm . be on the look out for mcclain making a video of his cata climb no lock (possibly alchemist if he gets it soon enough) where he is going to demonstrate this and effectively rape im sure
