LOL that was some crazy debate!!

Not doing Xbox vs Ps3 thats lame (and I've have to pull for PC anyway, since I've NEVER had something break I couldn't fix myself cheaply or get manufacturer fix for free).

The reason they pulled the backwards compatible PS3's wasn't all just price/greed though. The ORIG PS3 was basically a PS3 with cell chip etc, and some of the hardware guts of the PS2 grafted ontop of it and connected with some weird connector riser card. (I realize game systems aren't exactly like computers but they are alot closer then previous generations and this is the only way I know how to phrase it.) They had problems with overheating, and some mechanical problems..... but the biggest problems were system faults where the inbuilt PS3 bios and OS (not nearly a real os but w/e) would get corrupted. The PS2 innards attached to PS3 motherboard (well system core or w/e I suppose technically) did not play nice. The Cell chip was a very weird chip to code for/with and would not get along with the old proc/video aspect of the PS2. This caused so many lock ups the people were sending the PS3's back soley to get the bios etc flashed back to a non-corrupted version [non-hardware fault]. Ontop of that, the older PS2 stuff used larger sized circuits [say bigger die size on an old proc 60nm vs 45nm for example sake] that WAS causing cooling problems. The overheat issues wouldn't always totally slag the board, but sometimes just melted enough for the laser to de-align.
tl:dr version: Orig PS3 had part of a PS2 grafted onto it late in development cycle, and it did not play nice with the cell chip in PS3 core causing faults and system bios corruption...... ontop of some heat issues, usually effecting the laser first.

Newer Xbox 360's and PS3slim are honestly almost totally different systems than the originals (which makes sense considering the time frame). Faults in the originals have been corrected (example 1 ?or 2? of the cell chip's cores/units NEVER worked, so instead of allowing errors to occur they just started fusing that one closed on all models during assembly), as well as significant die shrink's. Smaller die = less heat, smaller size. Allowing more peripherals [xbox] or smaller size [ps3], and most importantly cheaper price [since less material used to make it = cheaper production]. IF you had to buy one now, I'd just buy brand new as much as that sucks price wise. To get from originals to now...... they had several BAD inbetween models. [aka nothing was as buggy as the PS3's that allowed software emulation of ps2.... not sure why this is a problem as my 4 year old labtop emulates PS2 games like a champ. Or one of the revision xbox's that red-ringed more than first model]

On a totally un-related note, I am buisy again so less gaming for me :/ At least lld on west seems to be comming back, it was REALLY dead for a while... but been finding 3v3/4v4 last several nights.

As I've always said... I personally like the ps3, it suits my needs. It's nice being able to sync my laptop to it for a media server, so we can play music on it while people are over here. There seems to be more people in this guild that own a ps3 over a 360 anyway, and I prefer to play with people I know anywho. I've been playing online A LOT because of it. I'm not that much of a gamer, so I don't care too much about which console is better for that. The ps3 has the games I like to play, and I can do more with it besides just that.

P.S. - James you know too much about both consoles... And I'd agree that both consoles fall short of the PC.

Also, what is this green team, red team, blue team, shit?
