Charmander is a great starting choice for Red/Blue players, and he's one of the first Fire Pokemon you get in Yellow as well. While it's got the lowest stats out of the starting trio, it beats both Bulbasaur and Squirtle in terms of Speed. Plus, it learns Ember, a very useful attack, early on. You're best served evolving Charmander into Charmeleon as late as possible (it learns its last technique at level 46). As far as HMs and TMs go, Charmander is able to learn techniques like Rest, Swift, Dig, Dragon Rage, Seismic Toss, Toxic, and more.


Like all Fire Pokemon, Charmander has a real problem when fighting against Water, Ground and Rock Pokemon. If you're up against Charmander, stay away from Fire, Grass, Ice and Bug Pokemon and attack it with standard Water and Ground techniques like Surf or Dig to knock it out quickly.

Charmander's name's origin shouldn't be much of a mystery to you. It's a fire lizard -- so you combine "char" (as in burn) and Salamander into Charmander.
