Today was the opening of Winterlude which is a big winter festival in Ottawa that last 2 weeks and 3 weekends. We went downtown to see the fireworks for the opening and it was quite a show! There was also a huge outdoor dance floor on the snow with more lights than a night club and of course outlets to buy coffee, hot chocolate and snacks. The international ice carving competition also begins today and the carvers will work all through the weekend to finish their sculptures. There are carvers from Canada, USA, Mexico, France, Sweden, Poland, Japan, China, Philippines and more. It was the first time I seen the carvers in action as I normally go the second weekend. They were using all kind of tools, saws, chain, saws, drill, chisels you name it. After spending almost 3 hours outside at -11 celsuis it was time to come home. Here is one of the carvings that I took a picture of in 2008.
