First Dan, thanks for the op on the little blue balls (thought I'd hand Dave a 2nd shot at it, he seems to have missed it the first time).
Second, I share your chagrin over the treatment of Pearl Harbor Day. Take heart, there was mention in a very interesting place - Chris Berman on ESPN, during the recap show (I think, it may have been eariler in the day). He (Berman) asked anyone who sees someone from that generation to stop them and thank them for the sacrifices, etc, etc... considering that most ESPN programming has become a combination video game commercial/rap video, I was amazed but pleased to see this sort of commentary.
Third, as a New Yorker (reformed) that grew up on WNEW (dinosaur rock, before dinosaur rock was "dinosaur rock"), an FM station that used to have John Lennon visit and chat with one of the DJ's, I am of the opinion that December 8th should be skipped on the calendar, like hotels skip the 13th floor. My personal favorite tribute to Lennon ever came shortly after his death, the WKRP episode about religion and censorship (which btw is still on point today). RIP walrus...
Thanks for letting me know about that. Also thanks for using the word "chagrin" in your response. I love that word.
This time of year always gets to me with regard to my remembrances of the "great generation" that my parents were part of. My father was the Commander of the local VFW post, and every Pearl Harbor Day I spent as a child involved watching an honor guard place a wreath into the Ohio River, followed by a rifle salute. Cool, mysterious and heavy stuff for a little kid. Probably the first time I saw adults cry.
My mother often shared her memories of "boys" (her term) that she went to high school with, some whom she had dated, that perished in the attack on Pearl Harbor, and later in the European and Pacific theaters.
I suppose they both felt the unstoppable juggernaut of times' passing as the public's memory of WW1 diminished.
