yeah driver /sound card. laptop is not my thing i hate those..
if it was desktop id say remove and re install the sound card manually, but i wouldve advise doing that in a laptop.
i could never get the shit back in the slot.

what sound card is it?
xonar
audigy
creative etc?

even if u plug in headphones u cant hear anything? have u tried?

e/ device manager,
pull a search on computer wait are u running vista?
even tho
device manager>sound> right click> drivers tab> update driver maybe?

so u tried headphones and still nothing?

optiarc sounds like a cd rom driver.
go to device manager click sound check what it says
high definition audio device.. etc.. and right click and check driver tab and see what it says for driver

edit: check if u have sound MUTED LOL
