This happened to me with a long term friend of like 5 years.
(Short version) Everyone called me in HS I never had to call anyone to 'make plans' I would get about 40-50 texts every weekend about the plans of everyone else.
My 'best friend' wouldn't ever get any texts from anyone. The way we started hanging out was by him moving next door to me.
For the first year the guy came over almost every day to play video games with me in middle school. Then in 9th grade I lost weight, got a girl friend, and he stopped coming over. Girl breaks up with me and I have a really hard time heading over to his house. He decides to hang out with me again. Thats when he notices that I get tons of texts on the weekend and I'm apparently 'popular.' (I just had a different friend groups in 3 different clicks)
He starts coming over again, every weekend on friday and saturday evenings to hang out and play video games with me again. Really didn't suspect anything because his weekdays were all for homework. Sometimes he would ask who text me and where they were, and sometimes we would go out and meet people and just hang out with them all the time. Other times he would just randomly show up. It wasn't every time, not nearly. Around mid year of Senior year he suddenly stops hanging out with me, returning my calls and texts, all that shit. A few days later my new girlfriend tells me "Yeah for the last 4 years all hes done is talk shit about you. He tried to get my number like 9 or 10 times, and hes actively told me hes mad that we are together, but most of the girls have gotten creepy texts from him in the past way more than normal."
I go around and confirm that this is true with a few other people. Turns out most of the girls were really confused as to how he got their numbers ...I guess the dude was going through my phone...
Most people knew that we hung out, but I think a lot of people thought he was tagging along with me because I couldn't get out of it. Where as in reality I was actively inviting him. That shit stopped and he had a 'mental collapse' just after HS because he realized basically the only friend the guy had he was a dick to:
I confront him and he just says "I fucking can't stand you and I don't get why anyone else even likes you! YOU ARE SUCH A DOUCHE!" At which point I punched him right in his face and he ran away crying ...didn't even put up a fight...
He literally mocked me for joining the Military, then after I got out he wound up joining because his "dream" wasn't working out.
...I would say I pity him but the thing is he actively is the reason no one liked him after seeing how he text all the girls, and what he said about me...just fucking wow.
