Rubber contact patch has everything to do with friction. You are quoting the law of simple friction, where the coefficient of friction is a constant. That is high school physics. In real life, friction is a complex subject, and rubber undergoes hysteresis and deformation, and COF drops with normal force. There's other factors like as well because remember that the road is NOT a smooth surface at all, further implying that the laws of simple friction cannot be applied here. In fact, if you just apply simple friction, that would imply that for the same rubber compound, all vehicles will stop at exactly the same distance, since a = f/m, and f = (u)mg, so therefore a = (u)g
To make complex matters simpler, a larger wider tyre will have a bigger contact patch, and a bigger contact patch will contribute to better braking powers. At the same time, a heavier vehicle will take longer to stop.
