"Cobb's totem is Mal's top. It's use is never explained, although we see Cobb attempting to use it a few times. When the top is spun upon a surface it spins. If, say, the dream is mine, I will expect the top to spin down and fall over. This means the top must, in reality, do something different. What that difference is is never explained in the film. In the end, we see Cobb spin the top on a table, then walk away. The camera shows the top wobble sharply twice, the screen goes black, and we hear the sharp contact of the still spinning top as it falls over and strikes the table top.
My view is that the screen goes black because the drowning man dies."
wtf
"We the audience never know the "reality" behavior of the top. (One wonders why Mal didn't use her top to test her theory that they were in a dream world.) By leaving the nature of Mal's totem open, Nolan leaves the ending open. What does it mean if the top falls over? What does it mean if it spins forever? The ultimate question is the ultimate reality: is Cobb really home? And Nolan leaves that open for each audience member to fill in, based on her life experiences, losses, and desires."
