When I started playing HoN, it was all alive. I had at least 50% of my friends online every login and I was constantly in this Skype conversation where we yelled at each other, in a good way, with the adrenaline running.
Now I haven't been playing for 1 month, and when I played recently this year it has been with only 1 friend.

So my question is; Has HoN more or less died?

And if it has, why?

I play DOTA 2, but the only reason is because more people are playing it. I think HoN is more fun and it feels like you really have control over your hero.

The only negative part with HoN is that you can play 12 hours and be -5 MMR in the end... But in DOTA 2, it feels like it doesn't matter if you win or lose.

EU/US player numbers are decreasing quickly, Asian population is growing massively.

Ah, all right. I just checked their Facebook-page and can see for myself that there are many Asians commenting on the pictures and such.

HoN isn't dead. They still have tens of thousands of people playing the game. S2 is still producing new content and is expanding their business. You can join the hon tour and make small amounts of money.

Like Darkness said, it's growing in other areas, but not in the US/EU. My queue times have increased 10 fold over the past year.

I'd guess the reason for this is because S2 has pissed off a lot of their customer base by making anti consumer decisions, and pissing off the competitive scene. Where as in Asia the game is entirely new to them so they haven't seen how lame HoN has gotten over time. S2 didn't retain their player base when dota 2 came out. In fact my queue times shot up right around when D3 was released. So other people are leaving HoN for other games. There are some virgins who used to post here and now post in the LoL forum. However this can partially be attributed to people wanting to try new games and don't want to play the same one over and over.

I agree with your assessment that HoN is more fun and it feels like you have better control over your hero. I can't play dota 2, the delay is awful and there's no concede vote.

I totally agree with you and I understand what you mean. I should have mentioned I meant about the US/EU part. But I have to admit that I haven't done any research and I thought it was a global loss of players in HoN, but I was wrong when it came to Asia.

It feels good that I am not the only one who actually think HoN is much better than DOTA 2 when it comes to some details and overall playstyle.

Thanks for your reply!

From all Moba games hon has by far the best engine and the most dynamic gameplay. It feels like Lol is HoN easy mode and Dota 2 is just a bad joke when it comes to the engine/delay.
I would say it is always hard to swap to another moba but in case of hon the reasons are obviously things like the community and Developers decissions

queue times at 1600 are like 4-7 mins for some reason
queue times at 1750 are somehow lower, at around 3-4 mins.
however i've noticed that the mmr range in the games is significantly lower than it used to be. highest range i've seen over about 10 games is 80 mmr, rest of them are about 40 mmr ranges on avg. games seem to be more balanced now.

anyway hon isn't really dead, but it isn't the liveliest game either. it will probably be dead in the next 5 years though

It's sad, but the game had its positive and negative ways.

I like the concede as much as I don't like it etc...
