1) play the tutorial (it's quite shitty but still a start)
2) go to "create game" and choose practice game, then you are in a game alone and can check out all the items and heroes etc.
3) either play public games (not matchmaking) and search for "noobs/beginner only" games or play matchmaking and choose MIDWARS, that's a fun mode in which hardly any ppl will flame etc and you can test heroes in a stressless way
4) once you understand the game a bit (like knowing some heroes and most items etc.) you can search for beginner guides on the forums/youtube (if you want you can look at them right away, but imo it helps if you know the game a bit first)
5) once you are getting used to the game, you can start playing the real matchmaking (aka not midwars), but expect to still get raped and flamed for many games, HoN is a harsh game and so is the community

and there is also a mentor section on the official forums, but I think one requirement is to know the basics of the game aswell, so use this inbetween of 4 and 5 or so if you want to

Just stand behind a friend or spectate someone and see what they do, you'll catch on.

If you played League of Legends, then I'm sure you have the basics down already.

Try spectating a friend or have a friend use the "Mentor" feature, and play non-rated games. Don't try match-making until you've done plenty of these.

Those we're my feelings when i started playing LoL after playing HoN since closed beta.. Had no clue wat to buy etc.

If you played LoL you sure know feeding is no good and other basics. Try to avoid getting killed even more than in LoL, as you lose gold when you die. If you get killed constantly, you might find yourself with only basic boots after 30 mins. Can't really give much advice as it would be such a huge wall of text that no one would read it, and i don't even wanna type that much.

ps. Neither boots + runes nor boots + health pot are that good in hon. Buying recipes for items before you have the other necessary items is almost always just waste of gold as recipes alone do nothing (except take up an inventory / stash slot, but that's not really a problem) aka. get recipe for the item as last part.

E: oh, totally forgot, get used to denying asap, especially if you are playing ranged.

Let me know if you would like to have someone to play with :)
I could get a new account and we could sit down in skype and play together just for fun.
