Best hero for noobs is any hero; Play AR or SD for your first games, you learn almost every hero, and that is better than just picking the one hero you like.
Always make sure your health is over half if you're in a lane.
Always check minimap to see if anyone from other lanes are missing, specifically middle if you are top or bot, but if you are in mid, check both top and bot, if someone from your lane is missing, tell your team and make sure you're careful because chances are they will just pop out of the jungles and kill you, especially if it's a hero with a stun or disable that is missing.
Get wards, learn to ward, best spot for wards are up the top of the hills near the rune spawn areas, as you can see anyone incoming for a gank, leaving to go for a gank and the rune, which is a huge advantage, illusion, haste, double damage, all can change a team fight that you could have won, into a loss. Even regeneration if used properly can, say you get a hero on low health, it looks like he is running back to base, he drinks his regen rune out of his bottle, and you're on half health, now chasing a hero with full health, bad - So warding is VERY necessary, for EVERY game.
Don't go into a lane by yourself unless all 5 of the other teams' heroes are on the map, if 2 are missing, it's a terrible idea, if they have 1 missing, and it just so happens to be their carry or ganker, you're probably still screwed, or you could just get gayed over in the lane if you run into a lane with a disabler/stunner.
A lot more to it, but those are the main things you should really worry about, try and stay alive basically, but you also need to help out your team, unless it's a situation where one idiot ran into 3 or 4 of the other team, and expects you to help, that's a terrible idea and you shouldn't do it.
You should check out some guides on the official HoN forums, there's a great youtube video, I can't find it now but I will post it here, it helps new players A LOT.
Wow thank you for all the advice and time you spent typing that.
