My mx518 was on it's last leg, so I bought a g500. I believe the G500 was $10 more at the time with both having rebates.
The G500 has a slightly better button layout as I would occasionally hit the minus DPI button while scrolling. The G500 has the buttons off to the left side of the mouse, which I don't eou caver hit. It has lights telling you which DPI setting you're on, however if you have a brain you can figure out which DPI setting you're on.
It also has a weight cartridge which I don't use (so this part offers nothing to me).
I like how you can unlock the scrolling wheel spindle so you can quickly zip through shitty posts with long cat or whatever else is really long. That is a nice feature, and I like playing with it a lot.
It has this non friction cord which seems like it'll fray after 5 years of use, which is how long I had my mx518. I don't really feel much of a difference between the cords.
And one of the best things about this mouse is that the laser hole doesn't collect dust or hair. Every other day i'd have to blow out dust/hair in my mx518 since it would get unresponsive.
I feel it was worth a $10 upgrade.
I also have a Saitek Eclipse II, what a chintzy piece of shit. Oh well at least I can change colors unlike the Eclipse I. Though I mostly game on my laptop with my G500.
