i can't help but laugh at that but also at people who spend money on coins for whatever reason
can't remember the exact moment when hon started to die but i guess overall it was a slow process and each step brings it closer to its downfall
it might have been when they made the game free as a desperate measure to increase its player base but even before there were changes here and there that pissed off many people
the 'accept' thing this week was another good example of s2 failing to test or realize how dumb it was
in a community full of trolls it should have been obvious that many games would have failed to start due to people not clicking
queues got longer, games kept failing and in about 2 days and after 20 pages of complaints on forum they actually reverted it
Funnily enough I think it started to die around the time they made it f2p. This may seem counterintuitive but
1) You DON'T make a game pay to play THEN switch to free2play + microtransactions AFTER you've collected all the money from release. By doing this I think HoN pissed of it's loyal customers so much they either just stopped spending money or quit altogether.
2) Allowing free accounts made it so people could smurf for free. You have no idea how many kids who thought they were hot shit would pay thousands of $$ on resets + sub accounts to smurf. With f2p, you could get verified and smurf that way. Sure, it used to be limited hero pool etc., but you could still stomp baddies and you could now do it without forking over $20.
3) The extra traffic that came in after the game was f2p was mostly LoL kiddies that had heard of the game and wanted to just casually try it. With the community being so shit, these guys probably got flamed into the ground before they even got verified. That probably discouraged them from really spending too much on the game if it wasn't enjoyable. On top of that, S2 advertises so shittily (i.e. not at all) that new players don't come around that easily.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure S2 has done pretty well financially. They used every trick in the book to squeeze money out of people and it worked to an extent because people are stupid. But, if they looked at the big picture I think they could have done alot better long-term.
By the way, anyone else think S2 skimped on the lawyer fees when they got sued for porting Dota heroes? They didn't really break any law since they weren't direct copies and they were just using a concept, not the exact same name/model/etc. Seems like they hired a lawyer off the street to represent them for cheap or something.
