Even the smallest difference in a hero changes the game. If S2 was able to keep importing Dota heroes the game would be 100x better now rather than the shitfest it is today.

so they still have many that are 100% same as in dota
why doesnt valve sue them for those? i never get that, they allow certain heroes/items to be copied but not releasing new ones that are the same?

at the start of it all icefrog was employed by s2 but his name was never directly put on it some sort of contractual stuff. he was payed to release wc3 dota updates to keep it going until hon was ready to play, and to help s2 get there stuff started...because he was involved that is why they were legally able to port so many heros..which all ended when he stopped working with them. i still remember furrion was to be ported, but they panic stopped that one, and came out with sniper instead as the last port.

Yeah pretty much. Icefrog is one smart fucker, telling S2 to fuck off and getting a way bigger deal with Valve. Thank god he didn't sign a contract with S2 giving them rights to Dota. If Valve's Dota2 was never made the world would be a worse place. Pretty sad how S2 got sued / outadvertised / out developed into being a worthless company with a shitty game, but that's what happens when you have no original ideas and just try to mooch off of other people's ingenuity. Fuckers.

ok im not aware of any contracts or copyright laws but say i made a wc3 custom map and somebody wanted to release a game based on it, would they need my permission or wat?

It all depends on how you deal with the legal side of things. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but better get a good lawyer if you really want to try to get the rights to a game or something you made. Probably not worth it unless the game is amazing and can potentially make millions like Dota.

It was rumored at the time from the s2 people that were working in the office that worked with Icefrog aparently he's a middle age man of arab desent with a degree from MIT.

if icefrog did indeed work with s2 then he must have had some sort of contract or agreement
i doubt he did that just for the fun of it

I never said he was not under contract. However that contract had some sort of language preventing s2 from announcing icefrogs involvement.
