We usually play as 5, we always always have 2-3 good disables (magmus/witch slayer/succubus) a solid imitator with some type of disable (legionnaire taunt or moraxus stun and then a hard carry who can just sit back and mow down people.

Disable + aoe = fun game + usually win.

Just go whatever your team needs. If you have 2 carrys and 2 tanks that have barely any stuns then go a support with stuns (witch slayer/succ) and don't argue with your team. Also if you are playing a support and laning with a carry, let the carry get all the creep kills and hero kills.
