There's not much point in playing HoN unless you're on a competitive team. You can have the same level of pub enjoyment in Dota2 as you have in HoN. Valve is probably not going to shit on your face. With S2 they're not afraid to piss their customer base off, why deal with that bullshit. Now I can't even sell my legacy accounts as they're worth nothing.
When S2 releases custom maps in 2015, you don't need to have a grasp of HoN concepts to play those games.
And there are some people that are just burned out on HoN. So they start playing other games. Once you stop playing HoN for a few months, and only play Dota2, you get used to Dota2's shitty engine.
As for which one is better, you'd have to give a definition. As if you include popularity, Dota2 is much better than HoN. If you're just basing it on gameplay, they're pretty close. Though Dota2 will eventually become clearly the better game in time.
Arguing about which one is better, who really fucking cares? If you enjoy a game why does it matter what other people think?
