Heros
To start out playing hon, I would pick support heros and melee heros first. Support heros are like glacius, andro, nymph, witch slayer, and others. I personally would prefer you to start out as plague rider because of its effectiveness in the team as well as the simplicity of the hero. As for melee heros, it has an easier attack animation and better base damage for calculating last hits. Also, it has more hp so you don’t die often. Range, agility heros are the worst to start out with. I see many people pick archna and flint, thinking they can carry because of the high dps long range attacks. However, they don’t realize that it’s relatively hard to last hit in the early phase with those heros, along with the minimal hp they have. In order to have better items on range agility heros, one needs to have a good basics and foundation of last hits ni order to achieve its full potential.
Items
As for items, you want to start out with a health pot and 1 set of trees (3 cosumables) and 2x minor totem and a ward. Buying healing items are essential due to laning phase and early harass from opponents. Melee heros should buy a shield, and depending on the opponents will you decide to buy a hatchet. Too many noobs buy hatchet, shield, 1set of trees, not knowing that they wouldn’t have the chance to even last hit and get harassed by 2x range heros. Therefore, in that situation, you could buy a shield, hp bot, trees, 2x totem for survivability.
Lanes
If you are on the hellbourne, the top lane is the easy(safe) lane, and the bottom is called the suicide lane. Why? Because of the hon mechanics. In the safe lane, when the creeps meet to attach each other, they are closer to the hellbourne tower, thus decreasing the chance of hellbourne players ganked. Also, when the creeps are near your tower, you have relatively easier time last hitting. Furthermore, when opposing players are on the suicide lane, they will be more careful due to the distance to their tower. So when mid or other lane is missing, they are likely to stay back near their tower, granting you easier time of farming. Same applies to the Legion. Bottom is safe lane, and top is the suicide lane. When you are a carry(one who needs lots of farm in order to carry the game or dish out huge dps), it is preferable to go to the safe lane along with a support hero, whom will harass the opponents and deny the creeps. It is best not to attempt to outck your own teammate(the carry) since they need the creeps. If you are fighting creeps, the carry will be 1v3 in lane instead of 2v2. Also, denying is very important as it keeps the lane close to your tower. If the creeps are pushing near the opponents tower, a smart way is to stack your pulling creeps to 2x stacks, then pull the your creeps to the neutral creeps, and the lane will be taken back, and the opposing players will lose one stack of exp from the killed creeps. This part is very important. Many players do not realize that stacking and pulling benefits the lane greatly. For example, if you are on the safe lane, and the creeps are pushed to the opposing tower, they have easier farm, thus defeating the whole point of safe lane. Therefore, it is best to gain back the lane control by stacking and pulling. Many players will stand there jerking off not getting any farm for 2~3 minutes waiting for the lane to be pushed back. Instead of wasting time circling around, the support player should just stack n pull while the carry player stays in the back to absorb exp.
