It's very hard to speculate how much money they've made, but they've done some questionable actions which makes it hard to believe they're doing extremely well.

-they sold their ice arena
-they moved half the staff to Michigan, probably to save on tax and standard of living
-S2 should have made a cash shop at the start to milk it for an additional 7 months, why add one now?

They probably realized their current business model was not sustainable. They weren't making enough money from new accounts and stat resets to provide for future content and services, as well as back tourney prize pools. S2 needed to increase revenue to support HoN for another 1-2 years. So they either had to make a cash shop, or release an expansion.

hard to say, but S2, well atleast maliken has deep pockets.
and less cost = more profit, they are making a video game, they could be on the moon if they wanted.
