I like HoN as a dota replacement in the near future, its a great game good engine to work with and with the editor coming soon it offers a lot for a $30 package.

I like LoL as an alternative dota which is aimed at shorter games, focused on fast paced pvp. It's free, lots of noobs and kids play it, but it can be fun without the stress of a competitive game.

Biggest issue with LoL is when you want to play competitive and your team shits the bed (sometimes you do get competitive games though)
