Being a referee is a pretty decent job for a kid in high school or a kid with a high school diploma. You don't have a cunty boss as you would at McDonalds, and your co-workers are not douche bags, though that's because most of them are in their 40s/50s. You make anywhere from 10 bucks an hour to 21 bucks an hour (like i made today). Some leagues pay you in cash. It's a good workout, you get to stare at prepubescent girls and you meet new people on a superficial basis. And if you want you have the option to move up to the college or professional level.
Probably the most underrated thing, is that it's a huge responsibility. You have to memorize a shitload of rules and procedures, and also shit that's not in a booklet. If you're the center referee you're the boss. You make the calls and decisions. You decide how the game is run. You have to take score and kick people out of the game. You have to be professional, competent, and punctual. These are some great skills to have that McDonalds won't teach you. It's a lot of work at the start, and you have to invest money in taking the tests and paying league dues, but after that it's pretty enjoyable.
