yeah vouch
i remember i would just read guides then try the hero out. i would suck so bad the first few times. would go like 0-7 and leave, whatever. but over time i got better at the heroes until i could play them to a point where i could stomp most pub games effortlessly with them. nobody is willing to do that in HoN now. going 0-7 like 5 games in a row is a thought that scares people so much because oh no they will lose huge KDR!!!
also it seems like nobody plays just to play well anymore. they play half-assed and expect to be carried. if someone carries them, they act big and happy and talk trash in all chat, thinking they are good. if they don't get carried, they cry, blame team, rage, grief, etc. its almost like winning/losing is a flip of a coin to them. that's why they're so close to 50% winrate i would assume
when games go bad most kids just cry concede or go emo and do nothing to try to win. that's pretty much the biggest difference i would say between like 1600/1700 and 1900+ players. most 1900+ people actually try hard to play well and win, not really giving a shit about stats. it used to be that EVERYONE was like that in dota pubs / inhouses. kids would buy divine rapier and try backdooring. supports would suicide 24/7 to save carries because they didn't care about their non-existent stats, they just wanted to win.
and i totally agree with what you said about voker. i would fail with him so hard for the longest time, but now he's my favorite hero to pubstomp with, and i don't think i've lost a single pub game with him in forever. ask Ezro

yeah, people will sell all of their items and sit in fountain
this happens in about 30% of the games that look grim
and in 50% of those instances, the game is actually in our favor but their analysis of the state of the game is so poor that they somehow think we're behind and aren't in a position to recover/win because i have 500 gpm and their team has been doing nothing but camping one lane
i remember in dota (a shit long time ago, probably when i was rowe's age) this one game where it was so clear that we won (like 30-1x) and then the enemy team dragged the game out to 140 mins and ended it by having their leoric run in and backdoor our tree
i was so pissed, and i remember i was like "YEAH I WIN" cuz i wanted to win so badly that i convinced myself i didn't actually lose, but that's what makes a good game
i mean i was a scrub compared to now, but i never get experiences like those anymore
like i can't even sit and play hon for an entire day, but back in junior high and high school i'd spend entire days just massing TDAs all day because every game was enjoyable

maybe for you since you can't win mid without a huge advantage, like 3 ganks for you before level 6
